Exercise, Ketones & Kimkins
by Kim ATC
There has been a misconception warning (that also seems to have surfaced again recently) that exercising while in ketosis was dangerous.
Once again it is a ploy to scare people away from low carb eating. The fact is, anyone who exercises will be producing ketones.
The body can only store a finite amount of glycogen in the muscles and in the liver. When we first start to exercise, those glycogen stores are used as fuel. After about twenty minutes of exercise, all of those stores are depleted and the body switches over to fat stores as a fuel source.
This happens to everyone! High carber and low carber alike.
As a lowcarber, we have less glycogen stores and reach fat burning much quicker. Once fat is being used to fuel your exercise, ketones will be produced and excreted. So, not only is it safe, but it is normal human physiology!
Since lowcarbers are in fat burning mode almost immediately when they exercise, Kimkinites who have had some exercise will really melt those pounds away.
Don’t let the naysayers try to scare you away from something we know works!
Yours in health,

Curlygirl Loses 30 Pounds in 2 Months!
Name: Amy ('Curlygirl' in our forums)
Age: 32
Height: 5' 5"
Start Weight: 179
Final Weight: 147.5
Total Loss: 31.5 lbs
How Long: 2 months
I am so thankful that I found Kimkins. I had struggled for years with my weight and had almost resigned myself to being fat for the rest of my life. I knew I was too young to feel this fat and frumpy!
After my first week, I remember thinking I had found the Holy Grail of weight loss! Everything just made sense. I couldn't believe more people didn't know about Kimkins (haha - those were the pre-Woman's World days). I finally understood why I had struggled so much with diets in the past.
I couldn't believe it when I lost 30 lbs in 2 months!
At that point, I knew I would make it to goal if I just hung in there and followed the plan. I learned how to cook and started sharing my new found cooking skills with other people who were looking for low carb, low fat recipes that would work with the plan.
The support that I have received on the Kimkins forum is unbelievable and I never could have gotten to goal without it. I want to thank each and every person on the board for being there and supporting me throughout this (relatively short!) journey!
Kimkins has completely changed how I think about food and I am not afraid of maintenance. I would tell anyone out there considering the diet or just starting the diet - Kimkins works if you let it! I feel like I finally know how to eat.
One thing I know for sure is that I will NEVER be fat again!
Curlygirl's Cooking Videos!
I started making my recipe videos after realizing how hard it was to find recipes on the internet or in books that fit the Kimkins way of eating. Most low carb recipes I found were too high in fat and calories and most low fat recipes were too high in carbs.
I started modifying recipes that I found to make them more Kimkins-friendly. I've always enjoyed making videos so I started taping myself making my recipes and posting them to my recipe web site at http://www.eatinglow.com .
It has not only helped me stay on plan (and get to goal!) but has also helped other people see what they CAN eat while on Kimkins. Learning how to cook and make meals that fit in with the plan was a HUGE part of my success so I'm glad I can share that knowledge with other people.

My Favorite "Thank You" Notes!
We have had an absolute flood of new members at Kimkins from our Woman's World cover!
People have seen the light and are losing weight like crazy! I've read the most heartwarming "thank you" emails you can imagine!
Here's a couple to share:
Kimmer,
Let me start out by first saying thank you from the bottom of my heart! I know it is something you hear about a thousand times a day but you hadn't heard it from me, until now. You have completely changed my life and most likely saved my life as well. I had a heart attack in November and other health issues.
I am sorry but this will be a little long.
I started on June 4th 5'6" 260 lbs. My goal was to lose 130 lbs to find my former self from 20 years ago and weigh 130lbs again. So I needed to lose 1/2 of myself to reach this goal. I never thought I would be able to do it since I have litterally tried everthing! But you showed me the light!
These are my results from my first 12 days:
- Lost 24 lbs
- Lost 7" from upper arm
- Lost 6" from waist
- Lost 6" from thigh
- Lost 6" from hips!
I am so amazed at how fast this has been happening!
Thanks again, Suzanne
... and another email from a gastric lap band patient who finally found a diet that works for her -- Kimkins!
Hi, Kimmer,
I too read the article in Woman's World. I had had gastric stomach banding surgery in 2004 so the headline on the cover really grabbed my attention.
After the surgery I could only lose 40 lbs and then promptly gained back 30. I have always had trouble losing weight my body just does not want to give it up and doctors don't believe you when you tell them you have been totally true to the diet.
But this diet has allowed me to lose 14 lbs in 14 days. Amazing for me! I can't thank you enough for this truly GOD given diet. Thanks so much!

Kimkins Portabello "Pizza"
Authentic dishes aren't always necessarily traditional ones, especially when we're looking for low carb alternatives.
Here's a twist on the traditional Portabello Pizza with reduced calories and carbs to make it even more delicious and weight loss friendly! Great for the grill, too! Try minced deli ham to save even more fat calories!
Better yet, once cooked they freeze well and I've always got a quick "pizza" when I'm placing an order at the local pizza delivery for my boys. :)
Ingredients
Yields 1 "pizza"
1 Portabello mushroom, stem chopped and set aside
1 Roma tomato, peeled, seeded and mashed
1 oz part skim mozzarella or parmesean, grated
2 tbsp turkey pepperoni or sausage, finely minced
1 tbsp each yellow & red bell pepper, chopped
1 tsp fresh basil, chopped
1 tsp garlic finely minced (jarred OK)
1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
1/2 tsp each onion powder, black pepper, salt
Preheat oven broiler to 500 degrees.
Mixed mashed tomato with Italian seasoning, garlic onion powder, pepper and salt, set aside. Broil mushrooms caps for 3-4 minutes under the broiler stem side down, then turn and grill the other side for 3 minutes.
Remove from broiler and layer with tomato mixture, turkey pepperoni, mushroom stem, red bell pepper and top with mozzarella. Place filled mushrooms back in the broiler for 1-2 minutes until cheese is hot and bubbly.
Remove from broiler, sprinkle with minced basil and let rest 2 minutes before serving. Enjoy! I add a side salad for lunch or dinner.
