Toning shoes, which have an unstable sole, claim to increase calorie burning and muscle definition.
Now scientists have tested them to verify the claims. It’s not all rosy!
Researchers at University of Wisconsin at La Crosse found there was no difference in heart rate, calories burned or muscle activity in the butt, back, abdomen, thighs, or calves when participants wore toning shoes (MBT, Skechers, Easy Tone) compared to regular running shoes.
However, some people find the shoes very comfortable and this might encourage physical activity which is an added benefit for overall cardio fitness.
